Ichaweri House is the actual home of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta — physically relocated from his Gatundu family homestead and reconstructed within the Uhuru Gardens complex. This is not a replica or a model; it is the original structure in which Kenya's founding President lived, and it arrives here with its contents intact.
Inside, visitors encounter the furniture, kitchenware, and everyday objects that furnished Kenyatta's home at Gatundu — the chairs, the table, the kitchen items that were part of the daily life of the man who led the nation from colonial rule to independence. Few museums in the world can offer this kind of unmediated access to a founding leader's private world.
Ichaweri was the home to which Kenyatta returned after his years of detention, and from which he continued to shape the young republic. To walk through it is to move from the public story of statesmanship into something quieter and more personal — the domestic life behind the history.
