This mũgumo (fig) tree stands at the purported exact spot where the colonial flag was lowered and the Kenyan flag was first raised on the night of 12 December 1963. It is the most intimate marker on the grounds — the living witness to the precise moment Kenya became a sovereign nation.
Beyond its role as a historical landmark, the mũgumo carries deep significance in Kikuyu cosmological and spiritual tradition, where the fig tree has long been regarded as a sacred site of prayer, covenant, and divine presence. Its survival and continued growth here carries meaning that extends well beyond the political events it witnessed.
In October 2023, King Charles III visited the tree alongside President William Ruto, watering it as a gesture of acknowledgement of the shared — and at times painful — history between Britain and Kenya. The tree endures as both root and record: a living covenant between the past and those who tend it.
